Char cloth is one of the four basic items for starting a fire: flint, steel, charcloth and tinder.

Firestarting Using Charcloth

Some time ago, we posted an instructional blog entry about firemaking–“Survival 101: Making Fire.”

The video  and the post provided basic instructions for making a ‘primitive’ fire, but that post did not include instructions for producing char-cloth, one of the four essentials for making this type of fire.

The Flint and Steel Kit essentials are:

Flint

Steel

Char cloth

Tinder

The youtube video on this post does a great job describing the basics of char-cloth basics.  If you would prefer to view a printable pdf for making char-cloth, click here.
